preparing for a solo art show

Corpus Ephemera paintings art show by Sherrie Miller

This is shaping up to be a busy year for me showing art. Starting in April I’m participating in monthly markets with River City Witches here in Richmond, Virginia. Then I’ll be having a solo show at Art Works Gallery on August 23rd!

I’m calling my upcoming solo show Corpus Ephemera—with the Latin word “corpus,” meaning body, to conjure up a connection to Memento Mori and Vanitas paintings. These types of paintings are from a long tradition of depicting still lifes that are symbolic of death and the transience of life.

While I’m not yet quite sure exactly which paintings will make it into the show, there will probably be a least one or two that are most in line with these more traditionally morbid themes reminding us of our mortality. My own take on the overall theme for the show, though, is also a contemplation of individual identity, the connection between mind and body, and our inescapable and beautiful relationship with nature.

The painting shown here is one I call “Offerings.” This embodies the theme of the show, and depicts some of my own favorite things—animals, plants, skulls, and the night. Finches fly in to bring pearls and a jewel from broken treasures as offerings to honor the dead represented by a skull. While treasures do the dead no good, the question might be ‘what do we truly value in the life that we are living right now?’

For me, one thing I value is art.—Looking at it, making it, and sharing it. If you can make the event, please come out to see me and my artwork this August 23rd at Art Works Gallery!

“Black Snake In Hellebores” Art Print

“Black Snake In Hellebores” art print reproduction of my original painting. I’m finally happy with how the colors have turned out!

It has taken some time and effort to get to this point. Though I’ve had some success with having other art prints created through vendors, this is the one that has led me to finally printing on my own. I got a nice scanner and printer and have been able to tweak the results in real time to get optimal results with color and detail.

Now available in my shop at sherriemillerart.com/shop.

Painting on display at Art works RVA gallery, May Juried show

“Cold Bouquet,” 24×24″, acrylic on canvas

Showing in the juried all-media show at Art Works RVA gallery. May 26th through June 16th. ✨
This painting is titled “Cold Bouquet”; 24×24” acrylic on canvas. The subject for this painting was a bouquet that I was surprised with over this past winter. I’d decided to paint it when it had started to wither. I included falling petals to capture its decline, in the spirit of memento mori, to “remember death”—in order to remember and appreciate the preciousness of life.

Please contact Art Works RVA (artworksrva.com) for more info or to buy this or other paintings in my collection at their gallery.

Now showing a group of my paintings at Art Works RVA on wall 21A across from their Skylight gallery. Happy to be a part of the great arts community there!🎨✨

This collection of paintings includes a number of pieces that reference classical sculpture and are inspired by the concept of identity as it relates to the relationship between body and mind. A couple of pieces also feature birds, another favorite subject of mine.

All pieces are available for purchase through Art Works’ shop at: shop4artwork.com.

Dark Art All Media Show

🐈‍⬛

I’m honored to share that I had two paintings accepted in the Dark Art All Media Show at Art Works Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. My paintings in the show include: “The Clowder Witch” painting which won first prize, and “The Veil Between” which sold and will soon be heading to a great new home.

Opening night was on the Friday before Halloween, and it was a perfect theme for the season. The show was jurored by Chris Semtner, artist, author, and curator of the Poe Museum. He also exhibited his own work in his Phantasmagoria show which opened on the same night.

I’m so happy to have been a part of this show, with other artists exhibiting their own dark art. Many thanks to everyone who made it possible and who came out to enjoy it!

Exhibit runs through November 18th.
